Bumbershoot 2010 Preview

While Los Angeles is throwing a hipster-indulgent FYFest this Saturday, the land of the pasty will be playing host to the 40th annual Seattle music and arts festival, Bumbershoot. Descending into the heart of flannel this Labor Day Weekend, festival-goers will have their pick of 2,500 music, comedy and theater acts set across 12 venues in the 74-acre Seattle Center grounds.

Over the past four decades, the consistently quirky Bumbershoot has grown from a free local arts showcase to the $50-a-day musical smorgasbord that is now the largest urban arts festival in North America. Though at one point the festival spanned a jaw-cracking 11 days, organizers One Reel are keeping the acts condensed over Saturday, Sunday and Monday for Bumbershoot’s 40th birthday.

Teengirl Fantasy and Delorean at Popscene 6/10/10

Guitarist Guillermo Astrain and his band, Delorean, brought a little Spanish flavor to Popscene. (Photo courtesy of Popscene)

Getting lost in the music at a concert has never been easier.  The openers at Popscene last Thursday, Teengirl Fantasy, couldn’t have better prepared a sold-out crowd for Spanish dance phenoms, Delorean. More importantly, however, both groups specialize in a brand of music that adapts to any situation.  It was shocking how enjoyable the concert was after the very same songs could make such great background or studying music.  Live music always adds a touch of ecstasy, but without hearing these bands up close and personal, it’s hard to understand their quality.

Teengirl Fantasy, similar to Magic Man, is composed of two college students who don’t let small budgets hold them back.  Nick Weiss and Logan Takahashi met at Oberlin, where they concocted a potent dorm room style heavily dependent on Garageband and laptops. The duo labeled their music “No-Fi,” but I call it a damn good time.  The only complaint, if any, was that Teengirl Fantasy didn’t seem to connect with the audience very well, though Weiss bounced about continuously, and both looked to be really enjoy themselves.  And, for the record, the pair gave Spain the nod to win the World Cup…

Summer 2010 Playlist

It’s here. It’s finally here. Melted push pops. Sand between toes. The smell of sunscreen and chlorine-soaked skin. Dreams of South Africa.

It’s summer people. After a grueling year of school and work, we’re looking to take a much-needed break wherever we’ll be: at the beach, in some faraway country or in front of a television at 5:30 in the morning wishing we were in Capetown.

But wherever you’ll be, here’s some music to take on your travels. A mix of some relatively new material–with contributions from Canadian indie poppers, Stars, to South African rockers, BLK JKS–these songs should get you in the right mindset for three months of bliss.

I. Love. The. Teenagers.

Two weeks into being 20, I haven’t been overcome with any adult epiphany. Living on my own this summer made me realize that growing up sucks. Nine to five, bills, cooking and cleaning.

I liked it how it was. And I’m sure The Teenagers did too.

While their songs are laughable, they’re all about the memories and realism that exist between high school and college. They ask the important questions that you ponder at four in the morning when you’re up with your friends.

Are you really going to eat that pepperoni pizza? Would the world be dancing the same if Michael Jackson didn’t make music? What do you think about that cheerleader from San Diego?

So, if adolescent memories come begging, play some of these remixes and  ask yourself, “Who’s there for you when you’re cold and alone?”

The Teenagers.
