Mew’s Eggs Are Funny

Mew has the worst album covers ever. (Photo courtesy of mewsite.com)

Commemorative albums are always a bit anticlimactic. Mew‘s collection named after one of their first songs, Eggs Are Funny, is no exception to the rule. If you’re enough of a frenger (Mew fan) to get their latest release, you’ve probably heard all the songs before. Other than the brand new “Do You Love It,” the songs are all from older albums. Here’s the full tracklist:

Am I Wry? No*
Snow Brigade
Beach
Introducing Palace Players
Silas The Magic Car
Wheels Over Me
Saliva
She Came Home For Christmas*
Sometimes Life Isn’t Easy
Do You Love It
Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed
156*
Special
The Zookeepers Boy
Comforting Sounds*

Original album color code:
A Triumph for Man
Half of the World is Watching Me
Frengers (* tracks were also on Frengers, but released on an earlier album)
And the Glass Handed Kites
No More Stories, Are Told Today, I’m Sorry, They Washed Away, No More Stories, The World Is Grey, I’m Tired, Let’s Wash Away

Other than “Do You Love It,” the interesting thing about the album is of course the songs Mew chose to commemorate their career. Songs like “Special” and “Comforting Sounds” are shoe-ins, but “Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed” and “Silas the Magic Car” are a bit lacking compared to their other hits. The absence of “Hawaii” might be a bit shocking, although it is noteworthy that although No More Stories Are Told Today, I’m Sorry, They Washed Away, No More Stories, The World Is Grey, I’m Tired, Let’s Wash Away was only released last year, it still contributes as many tracks to Eggs Are Funny as any other album–and rightly so, their 2009 release could easily be their best work so far.

The release of a commemorative album is a little terrifying simply because it implies their best work is behind them, but let’s all hope this was just a marketing gimmick. No More Stories… showed Mew still have a lot to offer. Take a moment to enjoy Eggs Are Funny and Mew’s great past, but look to the future for even more of the Danish band to add to your collection.

  2. Whoa whoa, “Eight Flew Over” was the first Mew song I heard and the one that made me want to find out more. It may not be an uptempo radio-type song, but it’s one of their most complex and intriguing, and I’m glad they included it. Actually, all four the songs that debuted on Frengers are among their best, and were good indications of the direction they would be going in for “And the Glass Handed Kites”.

  3. Eight Flew Over is actually my favorite Mew song. a beautiful composition.
