Broken Records, My Latest Novel, and We Were Promised Jetpacks might have very similar sound, but for me Frightened Rabbit has had the edge. All of the singers play off of their awesome Scottish accents, but it’s Frightened Rabbit’s lyrics and homeliness which really get me. The Midnight Organ Fight was made by “Keep Yourself Warm,” which not only has awesome lyrics like “If we have a hormone race I’m bound to finish first,” but was one of my favorite songs in 2009.
Frightened Rabbit’s The Winter of Mixed Drinks is set for release on March 1, and couldn’t possibly disappoint. They still have that heavy but happy style, very evident in “Living in Colour,” but managed to cut out most of the boring songs which I think were too frequent on The Midnight Organ Fight. The album loses me a bit in the middle, but “The Wrestle” and “Foot Shooter” are definitely worth a listen. I can’t wait to see these guys at Coachella.
